Some thoughts on Mandy Brown’s “By any other name” over at A Working Library.

“Dramatic changes in form require equally dramatic changes in terms.”
…

“We will know we have arrived at a new form when we learn what to call it.”

This might be true when moving from one physical form to another. I don’t think this is the case when trying to replicate a physical form on a computer screen.

It has been my experience that no one refers to something like a Word file as an “electronic document”. When a computer file can duplicate the characteristics of any given physical documents well. It automatically inherits the name of the physical documents it represents. This holds true for text only files all the way to blueprints and everything in between. This is because the computer file delivers on expectations that are attached to the physical document from which it got its name.

Earlier in the same article the author made this point.

“The form of the book has persisted more or less unchanged for several hundred years now. The covers are generally softer, and the materials less precious, but Gutenberg would undoubtedly recognize the books of today as having more or less the same character as the books of his time. And well enough: the book is an object of technological invention that has functioned with only minimal advancement for centuries. Until recently, there was nothing broken, and therefore nothing to fix.”

I think people looking for new names and new form for books don’t fully appreciate the above. The fact you can’t dog ear a screen. Isn’t a problem with the book’s form, it’s a problem with screens. The book is not broken, which is why eReaders are solutions looking for a problem and have never taken off. Simply put new doesn’t equal better or improved.

When the day comes that technology is capable of equalling the book, I believe it will still be something that Gutenberg could easily recognize. This is because “electronic books” isn’t a poor choice in name. It is a description of what people want from technology. Unfortunately for all involved, replicating pages on screen isn’t cutting it.

Like the electronic documents before it people are not looking for a totally new way of presenting information. They are looking for what I would describe as, the structure paper gives them without the draw backs of it.

Looking at Verizon Wireless Nationwide Plus Canada plan.

Unlimited Long Distance to Canada & the U.S. (including Puerto Rico). Coverage not available in all areas. Airtime charges apply.

I think it is safe to assume I am limited by my “airtime”. Which is fine I simple hate it when companies try to make something more than it is. Four bullet points down they say.

No Domestic Long Distance Charges

Canada isn’t domestic, should I assume then it has long distance charges?

It seems to me in a rush to list features and make things seem better than they are. The person that made the site passed up the opportunity to list a features clear that might sell a few phone. I would appear that are no additional charges for long distance call made to Canada or the US. If they really need a “marking” way of saying, what exactly was wrong with something like…

Canada and the US is now local*

Wireless companies suck, why to they think figuring out price should be some kind of maze.

* Airtime charges apply

Why?

Because the opposite affect of punctuation marks is useful too.

Keyboard Shortcuts

1) The Apple Symbol (Option-Shift -K) 

As far as I can tell, placing it before a file’s name will insure that item is last in its list.

2) Other

Mu (Option-M) µ
Pi (Option-P) π
Omega (Option-Z) Ω

Mu, Pi, and Omega fall after Zed but before the Apple symbol.

The Input Menu

The ‘Input Menu’ tab is found in System Preferences under International. In there lies the ability to change your keyboard layout to another language. This is useful because OS X appears to rank none Roman alphabets after Zed.

I did some limited testing of five alphabets, here is what I found. Hebrew and Arabic letters will fall after Zed. It appears however that because they are right to left writing systems. Adding a name to the file isn’t as straight forward as it should be.

Greek, Ukrainian, and Korean letters also fall after Zed, in that order. I had no issue hitting “Return” then the arrow key to add a name to files with a letter from these alphabets.

A few things I tried because it crossed my mind. I tested out Option-P, it appears to get the Pi symbol along with the other Greek symbols from the Greek alphabet. On the other hand this “B” is Roman and this “В” is Ukrainian. That means you can have two files that appear to be named “B” in the same directory.

Why Do I Care?

I maybe the only one, but I want any folder I name “Вack Up” to sit at the bottom of the directory it is in. I also don’t want to add a ‘z’ to accomplish that. Wanting to know exactly where something is in a folder. Doesn’t mean you want it to be the first thing you see when you open that folder.
